Course Overview

This course has been designed to help you develop the core knowledge, skills and understanding that underpin computer programming. You will study four units covering information systems, data, security, encryptions principles and practices, and human-computer interactions and solutions. You will also have the opportunity to demonstrate the skills you have learnt by developing a software solution to problem.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

  • Programming Fundamentals – Computing concepts and their application through programming and design methodologies
  • Computer Network Security and Encryption – Security threats, regulations, methods and tools to detect and prevent threats, and algorithms of encryption
  • Human-Computer Interaction – User experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design principles and their application in creating interfaces
  • Practical Programming – Principles of computer science related to software development and their application in developing and managing a software solution

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

You’ll be taught in our recently opened digital suite, equipped with the latest technology and specialist software used across the computing, cyber, and IT industries. These modern facilities are designed to give you hands‑on experience and help you build the practical skills that employers and universities look for. Throughout the course, you’ll benefit from the experience of industry professionals through guest speaker visits, workshops, and project guidance.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

Transferable skills such as creativity and innovation, written communications, critical thinking and taking personal responsibility. Students will develop the ability to apply digital concepts to different sectors which is beneficial to the analytical approach included in many degrees. A grade of Distinction* is worth up to 56 UCAS points for this course, which when combined with other qualifications can be used for entry to a range of university degree programmes.

This course can only be studied as part of a combined studies package. It will run subject to sufficient student numbers and availability of government funding.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You will need five grade 5s including English and maths. This course can only be studied as part of a combined studies package.
